Optional Brief Bio:
* my 'career' began with my first job in 1960 as a machine operator in a textile mill, working on piece work and shifts
* after a few years I was promoted to be a management trainee in the same mill, the first management trainee they ever had
* after a few more years, including evening college learning, I was promoted again to Training Officer - the first one ever in the mill and nobody knew what it meant, including me
* the above 7 years means that I had learned much about the 'sharp end' of being an employee and much about being managed.
Knowledge and skills I still draw on today when helping you and your employees realise more of your potential because I understand your respective perceptions, inhibitors and possibilities.
I also know that there will be more 'common ground' between you than you might perceive and that differences between you are opportunities for increased potential and synergy.
* after a few years of being a Training Officer, I became a Training Consultant in the non-profit, government consulting company creating a nationwide training infrastructure working both in the U.K. and in the Republic of Ireland.
This role gave me experience of a very wide range of industries and in-depth understanding of how to value differences which I will bring to our working relationship as a fresh stimulus and data for our use together.
* I left that organisation to join a fast growing company in the motor retail business, hotels, travel and hospitality as a Personnel & Development Manager before being promoted to the role of Management Training and Development Manager tasked with establishing the company's first ever Management Development 'College' in London.
Which means that I tutored managers from many companies and learned the apparent contradiction that all people and situations have unique characteristics AND common patterns simultaneously.
This enables me to see your business and people holistically in a non-judgemental way. I am 'unshockable' in that sense and will endeavour to develop a similar mindset with you and your people.
* in 1974 I left London for Dublin, Ireland to become a self-employed Training and Business Consultant. I lived and worked in Dublin for 11 years.
* in 1978 I founded my own consultancy business Motivational Development Services working with clients in Ireland and the U.K.
* in 1990 I founded The Herrmann Institute North in Yorkshire at the personal request of Ned Herrmann creator of the whole brain model and Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument(HBDI), with whom I had trained in 1989-1990 in the U.S.A.
Both of these businesses are continuing to be successful even in today's much changed world.
* in 1985 I moved back to Yorkshire and have had a successful career as an independent, international, self-employed Organisational Development and Mentoring Consultant running the two businesses above with clients in the U.K., Republic of Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, France, and with projects in U.S.A., Israel and Turkey.
When some people say they have 30 years experience what they may have really is one year's experience repeated 29 times.
Hopefully the above mini-bio will have illustrated the range and depth of my experience and continuous learning on my part. I am very grateful to have had these opportunities and delighted that they are continuing to this day.
All of which means that I will bring to our working relationship a substantial contribution to the processes we will need and which will support and interact with your substantial knowledge and skills with regard to your business and your people and yourself.
I am confident that together, sharing our different learnings and experiences, we will form a formidable and successful team as a result.
I have seen many times that the benefits that will emerge from our synergy may astonish us.
With Pfizer Ireland Pharmaceuticals we created a start-up record-breaking high performance business with a flat organisation structure; self-managed high performance teams without formal leaders but with informal leaders and mentors instead; that exceeded all targets, goals etc. for 13 years.
With my partner client Lubrizol, we
won a U.K. National Training Award for a radical and innovative culture
change learning and mentoring programme, described as ‘revolutionary and
inspiring’ by the judges.
We are very proud of that. The image below shows us with our awards.
Quite an achievement for a working-class lad from Yorkshire

Click here to read PART TWO of the Story when we faced a different reality.
In the award winning Lubrizol situation we didn't do anything TO people or FOR people. We shared honestly WITH people the situation, eliminated a bunch of obstacles in their way, and created a self-management opportunity for them to release and realise their potential and create their own futures.
And they did, exceeding everyone's expectations, including their own.
If you know how to mentor people expertly, and we do, it's not a big risk to create a self-managing culture because the people involved are already experienced 'self-managers' - that is, they manage their own lives.
If they can do that, managing their own jobs and their livelihoods is not in reality a 'big deal' if you do the 'right' things to empower and support them.
And, that’s why I am passionate now about helping as many people as I can to recognise opportunities and to create their own futures.
People need encouragement and support, of course, and that is true I've found whether they are working in a large organisation or a small business.
Having a mentor and mentoring learnings are powerful ways of achieving this.
What-is-a-mentor? What are the benefits of mentoring?
Dennis has travelled his journey with the help of mentors and mentoring and has learned how to avoid the pitfalls, create a supportive mindset and reality, achieve success and enjoy the process.
And with his support, so can you, if you really want it.
A Mentee’s Poem
I wonder who I am you see,
Who is it that is me?
When Mentors’ help me help myself,
I can be all that I can be.
(intended as a small gesture poem to say 'Thank You' to all the Mentors who have helped me. I couldn't have done what I have without you)
